Baume & Mercier: Two Big Names Merged into One

Baume & Mercier has been classified as part of the top manufacturers of Swiss watches. And much to their success, their products have been chosen as among those who truly deliver quality and prestigious watches. This fame has led much to their popularity today and is still the reason why the brand has become such a prominent one in terms of the watch manufacturing industry.

But to tell its history, Baume & Mercier is a Swiss luxury watchmaking company which was founded in 1830. The brand is owned by Richemont, along with the famous Piaget and Cartier brand names. Together, these three make up the heart of the Richemont group. And because of this, Baume & Mercier is being represented in over 75 countries throughout the world. This has also led them to the production of about 200,000 watches every year. Among its clientele, the most important markets of the brand can be found in Europe, particularly France, Italy and Spain. Not to mention, they are also being distributed by 220 restricted retailers throughout the world. This number has led to its being established as a top manufacturer of quality sporty timepieces.

The history of Baume & Mercier can be traced back to 1834. This was when several members of Baume family decided to start the Societe Baume Feres in the Swiss Jura’s village known as Les Bois. But before this date, the family was active in the industry of making watches for several years. Their first priority was to produce enamel pocket watches. A few years later, Joseph Celestin Baume traveled to England in order to set up their business relations in another place. Their watches labeled as Sirdar, Diviko, and Waterloo paved way for distant markets to as far as New Zealand and Australia.

With this success, the Baume family was able to produce convincing proof that they are truly dedicated to manufacturing mechanical elegance and precision. This recognition was given to them when one watch garnered the 1893 timing competitions held at the Kew-Teddington Observatory. This watch got a score of 91.9 over 100.

It was in 1912 when William Baume was introduced to the jeweler/watchmaker Paul Mercier at a Geneva watch & jewelry shop in Haas. This meeting led to their signing of a November 26, 1918 agreement that a Baume et Mercier will be established in Geneva. This merger between the two companies paved ground for an immensely successful enterprise. Just a few years later, they received the coveted Poincon de Geneva, the official recognition being awarded to manufacturers of flawless and quality products. And it is with this honor that we all know now the famous Baume & Mercier brand.
Baume & Mercier –Over a Century of Watch Making Artisanship
One of the finest representatives of today’s Haute Horology, currently owned by the prestigious Richemont Group International, Baume & Mercier forms, along Piaget and Cartier, the soul of a powerful international corporation, which manufactures over 200,000 watches a year, and which has branches in more than 70 countries all over the world.
A typical Swiss watch-making success story, brand traces its roots back to the first half of the 16th century, to 1542, when a family of master watchmakers, natives from the Franche Comte region, settled in the Swiss Jura Mountains, in a small village named Le Bois.
Here, they passed, from father to son, their knowledge about creating sophisticated mechanical watches, until 1830, when two heirs of the Baume family, the brothers Pierre-Joseph Célestin and Louis Victor Baume, launched an family-owned watch manufacture, guided by the following principle: Accept only perfection, only manufacture watches of the highest quality.
Furthermore, after the presidency of the company was transferred to the second Baume generation, in 1912, one of the Baume heirs, William, met at a skilled jeweler and watchmaker, Paul Mercier, at the Geneva jewelry and watches fair. This meeting resulted in a very fruitful partnership, sealed in 1918, which created the Baume & Mercier, a Geneva-based watch-making powerhouse that in the following years received the highest official recognition of horological mastery- the Poinçon du Genève prize.
Over the years, the brand established commercial connections in the most important European capitals but also conquered distant markets like New Zeeland or Australia. Everywhere in the world, the horological products, manufactured by Baume & Mercier have always been associated with mechanical sophistication, impeccable functionality and remarkable design.
Nevertheless, the brand’s history reached another turning point in 1993, when it joined the prestigious Richemont Group international. Here Baume & Mercier brought a personal approach to luxury watch making, along its dedication to creating exceptional timepieces, defined by a powerful sense of class and refinement, remarkable mechanisms, and fresh authentic design.
Currently, Baume & Mercier produces impressive wristwatches, rooted in the fine watch-making traditions perfected through the bran’s centenary existence, but always one step ahead the watch-making mainstream, due to revolutionary mechanisms and vanguard design highly appreciated by the brand’s customers.
