Hamilton Watches, Where Are They Now?

Hamilton watches was once manufactured by an American company in order to produce high quality wristwatches and pocket watches. But throughout history, the brand expanded and became part of a conglomerate which diversified with other operations. Today, the brand name still operates as a division of a top Swiss assembler production company when it comes to quality wristwatches.

The Hamilton Watch Company was first established in 1892. This was also the time when the Keystone Standard Watch Company filed for a forced bankruptcy. Keystone was then sold to a team of entrepreneurs from Lancaster, Pennsylvania at a sheriff’s sale price. At the same year, there was a merger which occurred between this new Lancaster based company and the Aurora Watch Company of Illinois. The merger gave way for the decision that made the name of this newly established company after James Hamilton. Thus, the name The Hamilton Watch Company was derived.

The Broadway Limited was the first series of pocket watches that was produced by Hamilton. It was also called as the “Watch of Railroad Accuracy.” This was an honor for the brand as they were considered as the manufacturers of accurate railroad watches. It wasn’t until 1917 when Hamilton wristwatches were first introduced. Among the early collections of Hamilton watches include The Oval, Rectangular, Tonneau, Square Enamel, Piping Rock, Coronado, Spur, Pinehurst, Glendale, Byrd, Langley, Flintridge, and Cambridge. A lot of these models were produced in gold and solid gold filled cases.

Sadly, during World War II, the production of consumer watches was put to a stop. This is because all the watches that were manufactured were shipped to US troops. Over 1 million of these watches were sent abroad. The company was responsible for producing deck watches and marine chronometers to fulfill the huge need of the US Navy as well as the other Allied navies.

As one could remember, it was the company’s bold move in the late parts of 1980s and the early 1990s which led to their comeback. They launched a marketing campaign of their 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s designs as the vintage models were being given thought to. Today, the Hamilton brand is owned by The Swatch Group Ltd. And it is because of this ownership that the watches produced by the Hamilton brand have become popular. Recently, 3 new Ventura watch models were released in order to commemorate the would-be 75th birthday of the late Elvis Presley. It is in honor of Presley’s Blue Hawaii movie that he wore a Ventura Hamilton watch.

Hamilton- The American Brand Since 1892
Another typical American success story, Hamilton Watch Company was created in 1892, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and initially, produced only high-quality pocket watches, extremely appreciated for their immaculate precision, and, also known as watches of Railroad accuracy.
However, during the first decades of the 20th century, the brand started to manufacture wristwatches, and initiated a privileged partnership with the American Armed Forces. Hamilton Watch Company produced extremely reliable timepieces used, by a legendary figure of the American history, General J.J. Pershing also known as Black Jack and his brave troupes.
During the 1920’s Hamilton gradually evolved into a respected leader of the American market, and through the World War II, stood besides the US Army, when the presidency of the brand, made proof of great patriotism and ceased mass production, in favor supplying the army with over one million wristwatches, designed to withstand in any combat challenges.
Over the years, the brand dedicated a lot of time and energy to upgrading the mechanisms, innovating shapes and textures and implementing pioneering technologies into its models. Thus, in 1957, after 3 years of research, the brand released its legendary Ventura model, the world’s first battery-powered timepiece. The concept thrilled the entire watch-making industry, being extremely popular through 1960’s, when a Ventura model appeared with Elvis Presley himself in a production called Blue Hawaii.
Furthermore, in 1970 the brand sunned the world with the very first digital wristwatch, characterized by impeccable functionality and extremely modern design, featured in iconic productions of the American cinema, like You’ve Got Mail, Lethal Weapon 4, Men in Black, or Independence Day.
Nevertheless, through the 1980s, Hamilton gave a new life to the classic models, extremely popular back in the 1920s. Powerfully American models, defined by minimalism and elegance, like the remarkable Boulton or Ardmore lines, fueled an industry-wide trend, spread all over the world.
